Sturgeon Report: Granddaddy’s On the Line

I went out with my son as well as a repeat client and his dad for father’s day. The Spring Chinook didn’t want to play so we went to chase some granddaddy sturgeon. Our smallest fish was around 5 feet long with a big one of nearly 7 foot deciding join us. He even gave Jeremy’s dad an air force salute by sending all 150+ lbs of itself into the air twice!

My son Bobby showing off a 6 foot sturgeon he reeled in while helping me with a Columbia River fishing trip

The bait of choice today was a combination of tuna belly and sand shrimp. We fished the last of the outgoing as well as the first part of the incoming tide. This is one of my favorite spots for big fish and it didn’t disappoint. Everyone but me went home with sore arms. The only reason mine weren’t is because I let everyone else land these dinosaurs. There are a ton of fish getting caught and released. I’m hoping we get to see a retention season soon. I can’t wait to deliver another great sturgeon report.

For the tech guys out there, here’s the equipment list:

Rod: Lamiglass Battle Glass 8′ and Okuma Guide Select Classic MH 9′

Reel: Daiwa Lexa 300 spooled with 50 lb braid and Okuma Coldwater 300 spooled with 65 lb braid

Leader: 50 lb Dacron

Hook: Gamakatsu Big River Bait in 5/0
