What to Expect During a Buoy 10 Salmon Fishing Charter
I will let you know the exact meeting time a day or so ahead of time. Weather and tides decide the schedule for when and where the fish are most likely to start biting. Typical departures are between 7 AM and 9 AM. The west basin marina has restrooms on site. Parking is easier with an early arrival, but generally available. Once everyone is loaded up and the safety briefing is finished we will head out to a likely spot. We generally move around quite a bit depending on tide, water temperature, and where the bite is. There will also be an opportunity to spot wildlife including seals, sea lions, harbor porpoises, and any number of birds. At times we will be fishing around large numbers of other boats.
Buoy 10 Salmon Bite
Buoy 10 fishing generally consists of a lot of trolling punctuated by a lot of heavy action all at once. Once we find the fish, the bites usually come fast and hard. Fall Chinook can fight like acrobatic freight trains, including leaping out of the water and taking long runs. Big Coho are known for cartwheeling like their steelhead brethren. We use heavy gear on these fish for a reason. When a rod goes down, DO NOT SET THE HOOK. The heavy drags and sharp hooks have already done the work and you don’t want to pull it out. Keep tension on the line, but let the fish run if needed. If we spot a seal or sea lion in the vicinity we may need to tighten up the drag. These critters have developed ways to steal fish and we need to beat them to the boat!
