A closeup view of a freshly caught spring chinook being held by Jerad Sorber, Astoria Oregon Fishing Guide
A freshly caught Columbia River Late Spring/Early Summer Chinook with the characteristic Summer green back

If I had bet on whether or not I thought we’d get another Spring Chinook season I would have lost money. The compact has surprised me with a late opener for Spring Chinook. June 5-the 15th will now be open with a 1 hatchery fish limit below Bonneville. This time of year we will likely see a lot more Summer stock chinook with their characteristic green backs.

So what’s the fishing plan? Initially I’ll be watching the tides and fishing plugs on the outgoing tide and troll flashers on the incoming tide. I’ll stick to my usual spots below Clatskanie. Departure locations will likely primarily be the Westport County Boat Launch and the John Day County Park near Astoria. By the end of next week the new boat will be up and running. I’m curious to know who will be on Blue Jay’s last trip and the Ju Ju’s first one.

Even though it’s June I’m still offering my normal Spring Chinook rate of $250 per seat. Call or book online for seats!
