Astoria Fall Coho Fishing
Fall Coho Fishing is the secret cheat code of Astoria. Once the Buoy 10 Chinook Season closes and the crowds leave, the lowest reaches of the Columbia River fill with the forgotten silver treasure of fall Coho Salmon. The fish that were sizing up in the ocean all summer have now reached their peak and are charging into the estuary to fill the gap left by the departing Chinook.

What to Expect During a fall Coho Salmon Fishing Charter

I will let you know the exact meeting time and location a day or so ahead of time. Weather and tides decide the schedule for when and where we fish. Once loaded up and the safety briefing is done we will head out to our starting location. Plan to enjoy seeing some wildlife, including seals, sea lions, and birds.
We will typically fish on the North Side of the Columbia River above the Astoria-Megler Bridge. Depending on weather and seasons we may fish further upriver near Puget Island. Trolling with flashers and bait is the main technique we will use. We usually find fish fairly quickly If we don’t, expect to move several times.
Salmon Rodeo, the main event(s)!
Once we find the fish, the bites usually come fast! A school of coho can get multiple rods on at the same time. The typical limit is 2 hatchery salmon per person, however this can change from year to year. It’s not uncommon to have early limits and spend extra time doing sightseeing. A combination trip with crab is a great way to maximize your time on the water.
